It
has been a tough month for mackerel and tuna as the water has been green all
month due to the persistent swell. Something
has
to change and it looks good after Easter with low swells for the foreseeable
future.
Bottom
fish have also been a bit far between, also due to the dirty water, I am sure it
helps for them to see the bait, soft plastic or jig
from
a distance.

On the way to Coral Bay
Ian Hook called in to Kalbarri on his way to Coral Bay.
Last time he was here he went out in the 7.8m boat and cleaned
up on mulloway and mackerel. This time he brought his
mate Rory Futter and his sons, Jordan and Col and mate Josh Loperato. After
trolling
for an hour or so without as much as a sniff, they
stopped over a lump not far from the Sand Patch.
Within minutes of
Jordan hitting the bottom with one of my hire rods, a Penn 330GT2 loaded with
65lb braid his arms began to stretch!
Whatever it was, was
tearing line off a tight drag and when the backing started to leave the reel,
things started to get serious! It was
then that something
broke and he started to get line back but he still had a fight on his hands!
This samsonfish eventually came to the gaff, the biggest
fish he has ever
caught. Jordan gets Bite of the Month and picks up a striketech reel. Well done
Jordan.
Later, a slowly
sinking garfish was taken and my Striketech reel with 30lb braid started to
hum. Rory was very quick to grab the rod and it
was called for a
shark. He battled on, well under gunned but in the end the reel held up and this
cobia came aboard.
Nice fish Rory.
All the Luck?
Josh Fox has been out from Kalbarri before and this time
brought mate Brendan Evill with him. The weather was quite crappy to say the
least.
With no other better day to go out, off they went.
Now sometimes it just goes one person’s way the whole day.
First spot they got to Brendan dropped a good fish on the first drop, but Josh
landed this great coral trout, it went 5kgs and was on his
bucket list of species. With no more luck they moved to another spot.
Josh landed a few odds and sods and the sounder showed good
fish but few bites. When they did bite Brendan dropped all the good ones.
They worked out that the fish were extremely timid and were
only biting on light leaders and lightly weighted hooks.
But alas the bite time was over and time to head back. Brendan
thought he was onto something but it turned out to be this cute little
hammerhead shark
Kalbarri Sports Fishing Classic
As usual I entered
the Classic and fished the game section with wife Sue and John Hoye who comes
up from Perth each year. We have been
fishing the Classic
together for a long time now, and John had a great comp carrying Sue and I who both
failed to put points on the board.
John’s great catches
shown above and a mackerel on 3kg line on the last day put us into 2nd
position - Champion Game Boat over 7m.
The cobia went 10.5kg
and was caught on 3kg line while the tuna went 14.6kg was on 6kg line. John
picked
up Men’s Meritorious
Game for his cobia as well.
Here are a few pics
that other anglers caught during the comp.
Lui Palamara had
mulloway most days and won Champion Angler Bottom.
Junior Harry Waite caught
one fish but a good
one, an 11.88 kg
yellow-fin tuna on 3kg line that was good enough to win Champion Angler Junior
Game, Highest Point Scoring Game Fish,
and Highest Point Scoring
Tuna. It would also have been a National and State record for a junior had he
been a member of ANSA.
Kane DeGrauw had the Heaviest Black Bream from the river at 1.45kgs.
Junior brothers Dylan
and Bodee Stephenson each had good fish each day.
Heaviest Dhufish went
to Brett Kielman, a 9.94kg specimen
and Heaviest Snapper went to Graeme Black
at 7.4kgs
Runner-up Junior Game
went to Brice Parker who has been fishing the Classic for many years, he landed
two mackerel on 4kg line
but not enough points
to knock off Harry’s big tuna.
Jordan Futter got the bite of his life when his 65lb braid
outfit started to unload line very quickly.
After the backing started to leave the reel, it was time to
tighten up the already tight drag and then something bust!
However, there was still this big samsonfish attached which
gave him a bit of a work out before being boated.
Jordan wins a Striketech reel, compliments of Striketech
reels and Murchison Boat Hire.

A nice mangrove
jack from the river for Karen
and a couple of javelin fish for Lui.
The river is in
great condition, when the jacks and javelin fish are around means that the
river is in
good condition
and fishing well. Cheryl also landed an 8kg mulloway well up river that she
released!
Junior angler Riley
Mole and dad Tony each got a mulloway on line class. Riley’s was on 6kg line
and Tony got his on 3kg line.
