September 2013

 Email: lasue@wn.com.au           www.murchisonboathire.com.au

Fairly quiet this month, which is normal, the weather is not that crash hot and it is cold making it difficult fishing.
The whales are just about finished their migration so it is only a matter of waiting until the weather gets better and
For the mackerel and tuna to turn up in December.
A couple of good Youtube videos to watch, so enjoy.

Billbash 2013
Arnie Slabber has produced a second marlin and sailfish video of his last trip up to Exmouth for the Billbash 2013

Arnie and mates hired 2 of my boats for the event and here is his story.
Billbash is a ‘catch and release’ tournament organised amongst friends, held off Tantabiddi each year.  2013 was a very successful year with
plenty of sailfish and black marlin caught. Interestingly, the majority of billfish were caught ‘in close’ this year, in the 40m - 60m depth range.
All billfish were caught using skirted lures and were released as soon as possible after a couple of photos.
Our team, fishing from Murchison Boat hire’s 6.5m boat ‘Ehzzah’, consisted of Nick Markham, Rory Crundall, Mark Arkell, Stu Jardine and myself (Arnie Slabber).
We placed second in the competition this year with a total of 5 Billfish caught (3 sailfish and 2 black marlin).

Nick Markham caught this sailfish on a pink and blue Richter metal head skirt with a TLD 25.
Rory Crundall caught his first black marlin on a pink Oscar Skirt which took him around 40 minutes to get to the boat.
Arnie Slabber’s first sailfish. Caught on a white soft Oscar skirt. Took about 20 minutes to get to the boat on a TLD 25.
All sailfish caught were nice big healthy specimens.

The coral trout in the photo measured 79cm and was caught by Rory Crundall.  The trout was caught as by catch after it smashed a
marlin lure which was allowed to sink to the bottom!

Stu Jardine caught his first marlin on his 27th birthday! Not a bad birthday present!

The 25kg barracuda was caught by Arnie Slabber. The barracuda was hooked by trolling a whole bonito through a bait ball close to the surface.
The bonito was in the water for about 30 seconds before the barracuda nailed it!

Mark Arkell caught this sailfish on a white soft Oscar Skirt with a TLD 50.  Again, a nice large sailfish which took around 30 mins to boat.

Kalbarri Offshore & Angling Club Local Comp.
15th September
Very quiet comp this month, the weather was so crap no boats went out, but the river anglers scored a few fish.
Cheryl had a good sizes bream,
while Frank had the biggest tailor for the year so far at 3.52kgs
I was happy with my result. Heading down to Chinaman’s point, I got the smaller one first cast!
Second cast, I dropped one! Third cast got the bigger one. Bagged out I went home for breakfast at 6.30am.
(You can only keep 2 tailor over 500mm)
Here is a spectacular fish caught by Arnie Slabber. The barracuda was hooked by trolling a whole bonito through a bait
ball close to the surface. The bonito was in the water for about 30 seconds before the 25kg barracuda nailed it!
Each month I award Bite of the Month to someone who catches the best fish from one of my boats.
Each month together with Striketech reels I am giving away a Striketech reel to the Bite of the Month winner.
Up Coming Events in Kalbarri
The Zest Fest went off well except for the gale force winds that came through on the Saturday night
and trashed every marquee except the main big one and the bar tent.
Pretty much put an end to the festivities for the Sunday, but most things were done on the Saturday.
Here is a short video of the event shot by Chris Lewis of ABC Open. He had a marquee set up showing short films from
Kalbarri residents. My crayfishing video was one of them.

Kids Whiting Competition
3rd & 10th October
A very popular comp for the kids, held during the October school holidays.
Any fish counts, put it in a bucket of water and get a quad bike ride to the weigh-station.
Get it recorded, quad bike back again. Sausage sizzle, great prizes (rods & reels) for smallest blowie, biggest blowie,
biggest whiting, most whiting, most unusual etc etc. All fish released and lots of give-aways.
Some of the 250 odd kids competing last year.

Kalbarri Sports Fishing Classic
28th Feb, 1st and 2nd March 2014.
I am starting to organise next year’s Classic. I will be sending out sponsorship requests to all our regular
sponsors, but if anyone wants to showcase their business to the fishing, camping and outdoor people who
participate, your sponsorship is welcome, now is the time to get in, just ring or email me.
If you want to compete and need a boat, just ring or email me.
(I have only got the 6.1m and 5.3m left for that weekend)

Need a boat for up north?
Remember I will deliver a boat out to the turn-off for free for those heading north.
Just pre arrange and ring me from Geraldton and I will meet you there.

August

  Email: lasue@wn.com.au           www.murchisonboathire.com.au

Things are quietening down now that the end of the season is looming. It has been a good year and
up on boat hire bookings again this year. Still a few bookings to go yet before the demersal closure
starting 15th October to 15th December.
I have added a few video links at the bottom of the page that I have uploaded to YouTube showing my latest
trip to Gnaraloo, crayfishing, and cobia and baitball

Gnaraloo Trip
This is worth reading!!!!

Laurie, just a report on our trip to Gnaraloo last month with the 6.1m.
This was the trip that we all dread will happen one day and I suppose we can be thankful that we have, over the years,
had a basically trouble free run of incidents/accidents.
We departed midday on the Sat. arvo with plans to meet you at the T/o before dark with 3 vehicles- 1 towing a 6.5 glass Swift Craft,
one towing a covered trailer and the other to tow the Murchison Hire Boat. First drama was at Jurien when a strap came loose on the swifties boat, wrapped
around the guard on the trailer, pulled the guard into the tyre and promptly shredded it taking the plastic guards with it! Quick tyre change,
but now we don't have a spare until we get to Gero where we know some mates with boats and borrow 1 so we can keep going (all businesses closed in Gero).
No more dramas through to blowholes where we camp for the night.  Get up early Sunday am for the trip into Gnaraloo. Hadn't gone 10km's
& the springs on the Swifties' trailer collapse in pieces shredding the 2 tyres on that side! So now we have no tyres left and 2 broken springs
& no-one open in Carnarvon. Numerous trips over that shitty road back and forth to the homestead with food,
drinks etc for the boys who had to stay with the boat.

Late Monday the boys limp into Gnaraloo with this beautiful boat looking a mess. Mud guards all gone, skid marks from shredded
tyres down the side, with the usual splash of red mud from the rain and dust.
Apart from all the dramas, when we finally got out, the fishing wasn't too bad, considering 1- we broke the transducer on the hire boat somehow on
the first day, so had no sounder for the rest of the week and 2- had 4 - 5m swells and 15-20knt winds all week. Interestingly the word had got out in surfing
circles about the swells and the boys were arriving in droves from all round Australia. There were hundreds of people down at the bluff watching
these pro's being towed in on jets- quite a spectacle apparently.
Trip was over Friday but not the dramas. Departed early Sat. for the road trip home. Spare wheel carrier broke off the swifties trailer on the way out,
3 boat rods of mine somehow slipped out from under the canopy of my trailer and when we got to the blowholes and pulled over to check everything,
there was fuel pouring out of the trailer. One of the 60lt drums had worn through and we had fuel wallowing around in the trailer! Meanwhile the others
carried on while we re-stacked and cleaned on the side of the road. By the time we got to Perth the swifties canopy frame had broken it's
fibreglass housings on the boat in the headwind.
Hate to think what the total damage bill to the boat, trailer, guards, tyres etc etc will end up at and this was after we had broken both the axles on the same
trailer on a trip in April! I think our good mate has finally been convinced that even when you own a boat, there are some trips it's just better to leave it home.

It would take more than just a second to fix this mess!

They did get a few fish when everything was at last sorted out. Darryl with a nice red and estuary cod.

Mark with a nice Pinkie.

Darryl, Mark and Peter with some of the days catch on the 6.1
I reckon we'll probably hire 2 boats next year Laurie!

Mackerel Islands Trip
George Raffa , son Ricardo and mates Paul DeBoni and Daniel Palermo have just returned from an awesome trip to the Mackerel Islands.
George says the weather was not the best with very strong easterlies only dying down late in the afternoon giving him and
his crew a short window to fish in. He was glad he had the 7.8m boat in the conditions that prevailed.

When they did get out they got into so very nice fish. They have been going there for quite a few years now

and know the area well. It certainly looks that way!
Paul with coral trout and cod

 George with chinaman cod,

Sport fishing for trevally and queenfish paid off with some good size fish!
Daniel, Paul and Ricardo with trevally species

Big queenfish were plentyful

Amongst them all were great fish like this chinaman cod, and big mackerel.
The chinaman cod for Ricardo went 9kg. A big fish that pulls like hell!

A saddle-tail perch and spangled emperor for George and rankin cod for Paul.
Kalbarri Offshore & Angling Club Local Comp.
     24th August

Fishing was a bit slow all day during the comp but all managed to get a few fish.
New member Ben Guest landed an 8.6kg dhuie and good snapper,
while Frank got himself a big surf parrot fish from the beach.
My brightly coloured golden trevally was a welcome sight.

The river fished well for the juniors with Robbie landing a mulloway and Seth a 790 gram bream.

Ricardo Raffa wins “Bite of the Month” for August with this great chinaman cod caught at the Mackerel Islands this month.
Each month I award Bite of the Month to someone who catches the best fish from one of my boats.
Each month together with Striketech reels I am giving away a Striketech reel to the Bite of the Month winner.
