November 2013

fading line
Another quiet month due to the demersal ban that finishes on the 15th December. There are plenty of fish out there as those that have been fishing report having to release lots of snapper, dhufish, coral trout and the likes. The cray season opened on the 15th October but most anglers wait until the “whites” start to move usually after the full moon in December.
Best Times to go Fishing in Kalbarri?
Tuna – Feb/March
Mackerel – March to May
Dhuies – June/July
Snapper – Any month except 15th October to 15th December
Tailor and mulloway – September-November
Crayfishing – December for the “whites”
Best weather for boating – April to June (no wind)
Best weather for kite surfing - September to January (Lots of wind)
Best month of all to get the most out of it all - May (The boats are very busy then)
My website has a page on this subject which goes into more detail

Motor upgrades
My brand spanking new 115hp 4-stroke Yamaha fitted to the 6.1m boat.
The old motor was getting long in the tooth, so to avoid trouble and potential break downs I repowered for you.
The 7.8m boat is currently in Geraldton getting two brand new 115hp 4-stroke motors fitted as well.

Fishing in Mozambique!

I get sent photos now and again from a South African his mate’s fishing successes Africa.

Some of the fish landed are quite extraordinary such as big giant herring, strange trevally etc.

How big was the shark that took a bite from this shark!
This is on Bazaruto Island just off Mozambique, Google map above,
and they hire a fishing vehicle to access the 4km long sand spit that you can see on the extreme north west of the island. It drops into deep water and the fishing is quite good they say!
They said the highlight was about a 30kg black marlin trying to eat a small spoon on the sand island.
It followed the spoon into a metre of water twice and ate the spoon, but they couldn't set the hook.  fading line

It continues to amaze me the variety of fish that come out of the Murchison River.
This big-eye trevally though common in small sizes are not often caught when they get this size.

October 2013

 Email: lasue@wn.com.au           www.murchisonboathire.com.au

A very quiet month, mainly due to the demersal closure and I also had a 10 trip to the Eastern States and had to refuse a few hires.
The demersal closure opens again on the 15th December so a bit of a slog before we are able to catch those nice fish.
The cray season had an early start on the 15th October and those going out are getting a few.
I will put my pots in around the first week of December for the “Run of the Whites” when it is easy to catch
lots of crays.

Western Angler Win
I submitted a video to the Western Anger Video competition and won the monthly round and picked up a very nice GoPro Hero 3 White
for my efforts. I now go into the finals to win a GoPro Black.
See the video here.
The page loads and plays by itself, but it is a bit slow so be patient!

GoPro Equipped
While we are on GoPros, my 7.8m boat, both 6.5m and the 6.1m boats all have GoPro mounts fixed to the cab roof.
So those who have GoPros, you can just clip them in and film everything that happens at the back of the boats.
Just like this:

The 7.8m also has a mount on the side of the cab but you will need a Side Mount adaptor to get it to sit horizontally.

Big South African Mulloway
This series of pics was sent to me this month. It shows a 72kg mulloway landed from a beach
In the South Eastern Cape between Mossel Bay and Jeffries Bay
It’s quite a big fish, Shawn Mey looks quite pleased with himself!

Accidents do happen!
I went to visit my mother at the retirement home last week.
What a mess!
It turned out that at the last entertainment night they had Claude the Hypnotist!
Claude explained that he was going to put the whole audience into a trance.
"Yes, each and every one of you and all at the same time." said Claude.
The excited chatter dropped to silence as Claude carefully withdrew a beautiful antique gold pocket watch from his pocket.

"I want you to keep your eyes on this watch" said Claude.
"It is a very special and valuable watch that has been in my family for six generations" Said Claude.

He began to swing the watch gently back and forth while quietly chanting
"Watch the watch --- Watch the watch ----Watch the watch"
The audience became mesmerized as the watch swayed back and forth.
A hundred and fifty pairs of eyes followed the movements of the gently swaying watch.

And then, suddenly, the chain broke!!!
The beautiful watch fell to the stage and burst apart on impact"

"SHIT" said Claude.
It took them three days to clean the Senior Citizens' Centre.
Claude won’t be invited back!

Kids Whiting Competition
3rd & 10th October
A record breaking number of kids turned out on the first day to fish this catch and release kids comp. 302 kids lined up for the 9am start
& loads of fish & kids began arriving at the weigh station, brought in by quad bikes giving the kids lifts to and from their fishing spots.

Any fish counts, and 24 rod and reel combos were given out for smallest blowie, biggest blowie,
biggest whiting, most whiting, most unusual etc etc. All fish were released and the huge species list tells us that the river is in great shape!

I shot a short video of the event.

Not many went out in boats due to the demersal closure but the beach anglers got their target fish like these mulloway.

Bream were landed around the jetties. One junior released 8 size mangrove jacks only to find out later that they can be kept during the demersal closure!
Sue landed a coronation trout, first I have ever seen taken from Kalbarri and had to be released.
I released a dhuie, and baldchin but won the boat section with a small sand snapper!
