June 2013

I’m looking forward to my trip up to Gnaraloo early next month. Great place to spend some time.
The fishing is outstanding, but you do need a bit of experience to navigate the obstacles that bereft the place.
70 odd k’s of bad road, launch over the beach, salt water showers and no mobile coverage. It’s pretty remote,
probably the best thing about the place, but you do need a bit of guidance as where to go to get a fish. Luckily
I have lots of waypoints on my GPS from previous trips and most are on the GPS that hirers get.
Some nice fish were landed this month, when the weather is good the fishing can be outstanding and that’s how it is
this time of year!

Weekend trip
Reuben Osborne booked a trip last month with a bunch of mates, but an ugly accident to his right hand put him into hospital. A bit of surgery sorted it out
but he had to delay to mid-June after a bit of physio.
His recovering hand managed to hold up when this coral trout hammered his bait
and this rankin cod was welcomed aboard.
A troll first up in the morning resulted in a double hook-up of yellow-fin tuna. They had just got to a recommended tuna and mackerel spot on the
GPS and let their lines out with the usual Halco Laser Pro 190’s tied on when as they clicked over the break on the reel, both Nick and Ryan
hooked up immediately, rod still in hand!
Nick Sillen and Ryan Dodd hold their yellow-fin tuna.
Kalbarri Catches
Anthony Ridd and Cory Smith had one day out in the 6.5m boat and landed a wide selection of species such as sweetlip,
morwong, trevally, tuna, rankin cod etc.
Anthony Ridd got this yellow-fin tuna trolling on the way back to the river mouth.
Cory Smith expressed his surprise at how hard these gold-spot trevally go!
Nick Furlan and Grant Hurley were up in Kalbarri mid-June with their boat, however water in the fuel
caused some motor problems, which would have ruined a good trip had they not been lucky to get a boat off me at short notice.
It took them a couple of days to find the fish but ended up with a good overall catch that included
norwest snapper, big baldchin, cods, trevally, mulloway and this nice sized mackerel for Nick.
Have boat, Have Weather, Go Fishing
A couple of very good weather days were on the cards. I use www.buoyweather.com
for my weather forecasts. Usually a very accurate website and so it was on Saturday 15th.
The almanac called it for a poor day with a minor bite time at 11am not ideal, but when the weather is so good it is hard to resist!
Toni Trinka, John Millar and myself did the distance to my good spots and found it fairly quiet up until the minor bite time.
It was then when things hotted up. Tony got a snapper and then followed it up with this 6kg dhuie.
I got a nice baldchin and small mulloway, while John added a big red-throat emperor.

On the way back we had a troll picking up these two hard fighting yellow-fin tuna for Tony and John.
Kalbarri Offshore & Angling Club Local Comp.
22nd June
Sue and I had a blast last weekend during the Kalbarri Offshore and Angling Club Monthly Competition.
The weather was a bit windy with a fresh North Easter, but we stayed in close and it was quite pleasant.
We anchored and set a good burley trail hoping for some of those big gold-spot trevally to catch game fishing on light line.
Knowing how hard they fight, I opted for heavier than my usual 2kg line and upped it to 4kg line.
Good thing I did as this 7.1kg pennant fish gave me a severe working over for 30 minutes.
I had a second fish on board before Sue got her first hook-up!
However, she was fishing 3kg line and her fish went 6.7kgs. Pretty good going as these fish go like hell!
I got bust off twice on 4kg line and one blistering non-stop run emptied my 2kg outfit quick smart!
When we got back we looked on the Australian National Sportfishing Association Website and found that they are
both pending national line class records that we are in the process of claiming.

Ron Neumann won the bottom section with 5 fish one being this big red-throat emperor

Each month I award Bite of the Month to someone who catches the best fish from one of my boats.
Each month together with Striketech reels I am giving away a Striketech reel to the Bite of the Month winner.
Toni Trinka’s big bite this month wins her a reel. She does not do a lot of fishing, so this big dhuie was a buzz for her.
Up Coming Events In Kalbarri

Zest Festival 21st -22nd September 2013
After the success of last year’s inaugural ZEST festival which commemorated the 300 year anniversary of the Zuytdorp shipwreck, this year’s

Kalbarri will be exploring its cultural connections to the Cape and celebrating these through dance, movement, art, music,
performance, food and adventure. Check it out at www.zestfest.com.au and find out what exciting activities are happening.
Thanks to Murchison Boat Hire for their generous sponsorship of a BIG GAME FISHING SAFARI package
