September 2013

 Email: lasue@wn.com.au           www.murchisonboathire.com.au

Fairly quiet this month, which is normal, the weather is not that crash hot and it is cold making it difficult fishing.
The whales are just about finished their migration so it is only a matter of waiting until the weather gets better and
For the mackerel and tuna to turn up in December.
A couple of good Youtube videos to watch, so enjoy.

Billbash 2013
Arnie Slabber has produced a second marlin and sailfish video of his last trip up to Exmouth for the Billbash 2013

Arnie and mates hired 2 of my boats for the event and here is his story.
Billbash is a ‘catch and release’ tournament organised amongst friends, held off Tantabiddi each year.  2013 was a very successful year with
plenty of sailfish and black marlin caught. Interestingly, the majority of billfish were caught ‘in close’ this year, in the 40m - 60m depth range.
All billfish were caught using skirted lures and were released as soon as possible after a couple of photos.
Our team, fishing from Murchison Boat hire’s 6.5m boat ‘Ehzzah’, consisted of Nick Markham, Rory Crundall, Mark Arkell, Stu Jardine and myself (Arnie Slabber).
We placed second in the competition this year with a total of 5 Billfish caught (3 sailfish and 2 black marlin).

Nick Markham caught this sailfish on a pink and blue Richter metal head skirt with a TLD 25.
Rory Crundall caught his first black marlin on a pink Oscar Skirt which took him around 40 minutes to get to the boat.
Arnie Slabber’s first sailfish. Caught on a white soft Oscar skirt. Took about 20 minutes to get to the boat on a TLD 25.
All sailfish caught were nice big healthy specimens.

The coral trout in the photo measured 79cm and was caught by Rory Crundall.  The trout was caught as by catch after it smashed a
marlin lure which was allowed to sink to the bottom!

Stu Jardine caught his first marlin on his 27th birthday! Not a bad birthday present!

The 25kg barracuda was caught by Arnie Slabber. The barracuda was hooked by trolling a whole bonito through a bait ball close to the surface.
The bonito was in the water for about 30 seconds before the barracuda nailed it!

Mark Arkell caught this sailfish on a white soft Oscar Skirt with a TLD 50.  Again, a nice large sailfish which took around 30 mins to boat.

Kalbarri Offshore & Angling Club Local Comp.
15th September
Very quiet comp this month, the weather was so crap no boats went out, but the river anglers scored a few fish.
Cheryl had a good sizes bream,
while Frank had the biggest tailor for the year so far at 3.52kgs
I was happy with my result. Heading down to Chinaman’s point, I got the smaller one first cast!
Second cast, I dropped one! Third cast got the bigger one. Bagged out I went home for breakfast at 6.30am.
(You can only keep 2 tailor over 500mm)
Here is a spectacular fish caught by Arnie Slabber. The barracuda was hooked by trolling a whole bonito through a bait
ball close to the surface. The bonito was in the water for about 30 seconds before the 25kg barracuda nailed it!
Each month I award Bite of the Month to someone who catches the best fish from one of my boats.
Each month together with Striketech reels I am giving away a Striketech reel to the Bite of the Month winner.
Up Coming Events in Kalbarri
The Zest Fest went off well except for the gale force winds that came through on the Saturday night
and trashed every marquee except the main big one and the bar tent.
Pretty much put an end to the festivities for the Sunday, but most things were done on the Saturday.
Here is a short video of the event shot by Chris Lewis of ABC Open. He had a marquee set up showing short films from
Kalbarri residents. My crayfishing video was one of them.

Kids Whiting Competition
3rd & 10th October
A very popular comp for the kids, held during the October school holidays.
Any fish counts, put it in a bucket of water and get a quad bike ride to the weigh-station.
Get it recorded, quad bike back again. Sausage sizzle, great prizes (rods & reels) for smallest blowie, biggest blowie,
biggest whiting, most whiting, most unusual etc etc. All fish released and lots of give-aways.
Some of the 250 odd kids competing last year.
