Things
are quietening down now that the end of the season is looming. It has been a
good year and
up
on boat hire bookings again this year. Still a few bookings to go yet before
the demersal closure
starting
15th October to 15th December.

Laurie, just a report
on our trip to Gnaraloo last month with the 6.1m.
This was the trip that
we all dread will happen one day and I suppose we can be thankful that we
have, over the years,
had a basically
trouble free run of incidents/accidents.
We departed midday on
the Sat. arvo with plans to meet you at the T/o before dark with 3 vehicles- 1
towing a 6.5 glass Swift Craft,
one towing a covered
trailer and the other to tow the Murchison Hire Boat. First drama was at Jurien
when a strap came loose on the swifties boat, wrapped
around the guard on the trailer, pulled the
guard into the tyre and promptly shredded it taking the plastic guards with it!
Quick tyre change,
but now we don't have
a spare until we get to Gero where we know some mates with boats and borrow 1
so we can keep going (all businesses closed in Gero).
No more dramas through to blowholes where we camp for the night. Get up early Sunday am for the trip into Gnaraloo. Hadn't gone 10km's

& the springs on
the Swifties' trailer collapse in pieces shredding the 2 tyres on that side! So
now we have no tyres left and 2 broken springs
& no-one open in
Carnarvon. Numerous trips over that shitty road back and forth to the homestead
with food,
drinks etc for
the boys who had to stay with the boat.
Late Monday the
boys limp into Gnaraloo with this beautiful boat looking a mess.
Mud guards all gone, skid marks from shredded
tyres down the
side, with the usual splash of red mud from the rain and dust.
Apart from all the dramas, when we finally got out, the fishing wasn't too bad, considering 1- we broke the transducer on the hire boat somehow on

the first day, so had
no sounder for the rest of the week and 2- had 4 - 5m swells and 15-20knt winds all week. Interestingly the
word had got out in surfing
circles about the
swells and the boys were arriving in droves from all round Australia. There
were hundreds of people down at the bluff watching
these pro's being
towed in on jets- quite a spectacle apparently.
Trip was over
Friday but not the dramas. Departed early Sat. for the road trip
home. Spare wheel carrier broke off the swifties trailer on the way
out,
3 boat rods of mine
somehow slipped out from under the canopy of my trailer and when we got to the
blowholes and pulled over to check everything,
there was fuel
pouring out of the trailer. One of the 60lt drums had worn through and we had
fuel wallowing around in the trailer! Meanwhile the others
carried on while we
re-stacked and cleaned on the side of the road. By the time we got to Perth the
swifties canopy frame had broken it's
fibreglass housings
on the boat in the headwind.
Hate to think what
the total damage bill to the boat, trailer, guards, tyres etc etc will end
up at and this was after we had broken both the axles on the same
trailer on a trip in April! I think our good
mate has finally been convinced that even when you own a boat, there are some
trips it's just better to leave it home.

It would take more
than just a second to fix this mess!
They did get a few
fish when everything was at last sorted out. Darryl with a nice red and estuary
cod.

Mackerel Islands Trip
George Raffa ,
son Ricardo and mates Paul DeBoni and Daniel Palermo have just returned from an
awesome trip to the Mackerel Islands.
George says the
weather was not the best with very strong easterlies only dying down late in
the afternoon giving him and
his crew a short
window to fish in. He was glad he had the 7.8m boat in the conditions that
prevailed.
When they did get out they got into so very nice fish. They have been going there for quite a few years now
and know the area well. It certainly looks that way!

for trevally and queenfish paid off with some good size fish!

Big queenfish were
plentyful
Amongst them all
were great fish like this chinaman cod, and big mackerel.
The chinaman cod
for Ricardo went 9kg. A big fish that pulls like hell!
A saddle-tail
perch and spangled emperor for George and rankin cod for Paul.

24th August
Fishing was a bit
slow all day during the comp but all managed to get a few fish.
New member Ben Guest
landed an 8.6kg dhuie and good snapper,
while Frank got himself a big surf
parrot fish from the beach.
My brightly coloured
golden trevally was a welcome sight.
The river fished well
for the juniors with Robbie landing a mulloway and Seth a 790 gram bream.
Ricardo Raffa wins “Bite of the Month” for August with this great chinaman cod caught at the Mackerel Islands this month.
Each month I award Bite of the
Month to someone who catches the best fish from one of my boats.
