We
have the big Kalbarri Sports Fishing Classic This weekend. I am all geared up
for it and I have
three
other boats hired for the comp, I wish them luck.
Just
recovering from a hard disc drive crash. Can’t believe I just backed up all my
files about 2 days before.
Only
lost a couple of word docs! Back-up, back-up, back-up, remember to do it!
Internet
and email still down, but that should be up soon, so no website update or blog
done yet, sorry.
Some more good fish
this month, and now we are coming into the best part of the year, good weather
and lots of fish around.
Macs at the Sand Patch
Ryan Snodgrass took
advantage of our accommodation and special discount boat hire this month and
picked the right weather.
He has had a couple
of poor weather trips but made up for it this time landing good pelagics.
He sent an email
with pics of the fish he, Travis, and Phong caught.
Hi Laurie, you will be glad to know that your
halcos worked all weekend. We tried other colours with no luck, except for a
bright green deep diver right behind the boat that
nailed mackies and tuna.
We had a witchdoctor and bird daisy chain running
behind the boat as well.
Bottom Bouncing we got 2 dhuies, 1 pinkie, 1 rankin
cod, and 1 coral trout. Released the pinkies as they were 500 & 520mm, big
enough to
keep, but best to go back and get bigger – its my
way of appeasing the gods. Kept the pinkie and coral trout though.
That me in the middle at the trusty sand patch. We
cubed a lot as no birds and seemed the cubing did the trick, as when
we stopped cubing it went quiet. My largest Yellow-fin
to date.
Travis Kemp with the biggest fish he’s ever caught,
and first pelagic on his first trip to Kalbarri. Halco Purple
bought off yourself. He doesn’t want to bottom
bounce anymore after the pelagic fun!
Phong Dang on his first trip to Kalbarri, first Mackerel,
First Pelagic and biggest fish of his short fishing career.
Phong also got a pinkie and a dhuie that day. The
Tuna escaped him.
Great video clips
Arnie Slabber and a
big group of guys hire my boats each year, tow them up to Exmouth and have a
private
Marlin, and sailfish
competition amongst themselves
It has grown over the
years and now quite a few boats join in.
He made a movie this
time and did a great job on the editing.

Ashley van Viersen and myself have been experimenting with
a home made tow cam to take a GoPro camera.
We got some footage the first time out. Very interesting
stuff. Have a look at this.
Kalbarri Fires Again
Jarred Hurtado tells
his story of his Kalbarri trip.
Jarred, Daniel, Larry and Liam left for a 7
day fishing holiday in Kalbarri. While there we hired the 6.5m boat for two
days,
conditions proved to be good with low swell
and winds.
Day one consisted of trawling the Sand Patch
and just on sunrise we had our first double hook up while setting
the
lures about 4 feet from the back of the boat which was a promising start to the
day,
the
rest of the day was searching the numerous spots for some bottom fish.
We managed a snapper, dhufish and blue bone
that were kept.
Day two was another early start on the sand
patch and the mackies were hot on the bite again for the first few hours then
it
was up the coast for more bottom fish, on
the way the amount of tuna and birds that were working the
baitfish on the surface were too hard to
pass. Trawling some lures through them resulted in hook up after hook up with
some
making it to the boat and others getting
off. It was decided to give our arms a rest and head to some promising
ground we had come across the previous day.
Once on the pick in 30m of water, baits were dropped and the first fish to come
up
were
dhufish and blue bone so with enough for a feed we were heading back at 10:30
after a good mornings fishing.
Cheers, Jarred.
Underwater Photos
Trying out my new
underwater lens for my Gopro using the “photo every 2 seconds” mode, I got
these HD photos of a tuna that I hooked casting
with a chrome slice.
They are however the best 3 from about 90 pics
that got taken, so you should expect something to turn out!
Recent Catches
Justin De Mello scored
the right weekend to come up for a fish out of the 7.8m boat. With mates
Sam Timney, Carel
Nagel and Marcus Arnesen they got into some fair sized Yellow-fin tuna. 13kg tuna, Carel Nagel 12kg tuna , Marcus
Arnesen striped tuna and dropped another 2 casting
Justin got the
biggest at 15kgs, while Carel and Sam’s
went 12kgs and 13kgs.
Marcus Arnesen landed
striped tuna and dropped another 2 casting chrome slices to the schools.
Great Day Out
Marcus King and mates
saw all the fish being caught from my boats and couldn't resist calling in and
booking a boat.
Thanks to the girls
who let them go on Valentine's Day and joined them on the boat as well.
Choosing the 6.1m he
and his group set out to the Sand Patch with 3 hired rods and a couple of
lures.
None of the group had
ever caught a mackerel or tuna before, but it did not take long before the
reels started to peel
line. They ended up having to release some as they only had 2 fishing licences
amongst the 6 of
them. They did not even get as far as the Sand Patch, bagged out and back by
lunch elated!

Justin De Mello gets bite of the month this
month for his great yellow-fin tuna catch.
It went 15kgs and is the biggest tuna he has
caught to date.
